Sure there are loads of fun events coming up this fall, but all in all, the fat tire season is over for me. I do plan to race the Ice Man in November with my TSB pals, but for now I’m considering the season officially closed.

In the past few months I chased points for the Michigan USAC MTB Series and ended up doing okay for never placing higher than 4th at any event. I haven’t concentrated on any one series in a few years and wanted to commit this season. I decided in January to do the XC series and hone in on my skill-set. I took 5th overall in the Expert 40-49 division out of 44 competitors. I’m very happy with the end results given all the outside things in life that distracted me from doing any better. Life is good!!!

What’s on the agenda now… on to a few CX events and lacing up the running shoes for some fall laughs and a few cold brews!

Hey, What's Up?

Well, another weekend of fun racing in Michigan for me. The MTB season started a few weeks ago and I have only done 2 events so far. The Pontiac Lake Time Trial April 23rd, and the Brighton Stage Race (3 events) this past weekend. All have been a blast to participate in. I’m looking forward to the season as it progresses. I have a full schedule of events planned on the bike in 2011...look over there to the right (schedule).

So far this early on in the season my MTB racing switch has not been turned. I have been concentrating on running, because Sunday May 22 I’m running the Stony Creek Back to the Beach ½ Marathon. I’m looking to break 1hr 45mins on the hilly mixed terrain course.

My family is coming out to support the event, cheer, and volunteer at one of the aid stations. The event is put on by a good pal of mine, Joe Burns or known in the running world as “Slow Joe”. He is an active promoter of the Medals for Mettle Charity. I along with hundreds of others will be donating our Finishers medal to the charity.

Medals4Mettles Web Site

Who Is This Dude?

He's a pretty darn good bike racer, a great writer, and somewhat of a cool dude... thanks for the simple (yet-complicated) outlook at the silly sport we all love!

"For me, it's all bike racing...whether it be skinny tires, gears, fat tires, monocogs, pavement, dirt, or track. Okay, okay...serious time. I've realized over the past two years that trying to compete and train only 1-2 days per week doesn't work. Mad Science... will prevail!

I know the time I spend will pay dividends to more parts in my life than in actual weekend warrior races. Last year at this time I dedicated many, many hours to running and was loving the daily feeling of accomplishing simple daily goals. I want to regain that feeling and share it with my family and pals!

I'm about 90% recovered from a torn plantar ligament suffered this past spring and started running this past week again :). Baby steps, people...baby steps!

What is my plan? - Going to implement some cross fitness exercises, continue to concentrate on cycling intervals (indoors and outdoors) and re-introduce running 3 days per week.

2011 is gonna be fun!!!!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all! I’m looking forward to the Holiday break with the lovely ladies in my life :)

Hot Fun In The Summertime!

Summer is alive and kicking in Michigan. Hot temps, cold beer, and many laughs are filling my day. Hope the same is happening in your neighborhood.

The past few weeks have been loaded with good times. Spent some time with Mickey Mouse and his posse with my ladies in the Sunshine State, and have been pedaling a bit in the woods on the ol’ MTB, oh and let’s not forget…eating a lot of BBQ goodies.

Some bummer news...I re-ruptured my plantar ligament this past Sunday. Looks like my Olympic dreams of competing are rotting away for now ;) Need to keep the running shoes off for a bit. Hoping to be able to ride in a couple of weeks, though.

Back the fun stuff :)

What Happened?

I'm getting old I guess. McDermott of New York, emerged from a 15-member starting field and captured the first B.A.A. Marathon in 2:55:10, and, in the process, forever secured his name in sports history.

Been doing a little jogging the past few months…okay, I been doing A LOT of it. I set a 2010 goal of qualifying for the Boston Marathon on May 29th. There I said it! You know what they say..."tell people & write down your goals".

Boston is kind of a big deal in the running world and becoming a bigger deal for a non-running type of a guy like me. This event is something I have known about for over thirty years, but never have wanted to pursue it myself until now. Well, there are many, many reasons why I want to run in Massachusetts and some beyond explanation without two beers and a few minutes of your time.

A local qualifying event, the Bayshore Marathon in Traverse City is where I plan to do it. My age group is a tough group of competitors. A time of 3:15 is mandated to qualify. In September of 2010 I will still have to submit an official time with my application for the 2011 event that limits the field size to 25,000 entries.

The Boston Marathon is always run on the third Monday in April and is the world’s oldest and most prestigious annual marathon. The day has been coined has "Marathon Monday".

“Rock & Not the year an “Average Joe” endurance athlete plans for, but fulfilling none the less. I had bigger dreams and plans, but life got in the way…shit!

The good and bad wrapped up in a paragraph;
- GOOD - I had a ball racing mtb’s, attempted my first Tri with so-so success, trotted to the FINISH line of my second full marathon.
- BAD - I’m not in the shape I know I could be and compete at the level I want to compete at. I’m an average athlete with a burning desire to do the best I can.

This winter my off season promises to be exciting. I have started to coordinate a realistic race schedule for 2010 along with a training plan to assure me better results. This secret strategy includes the following…
1) A strong running program
2) structured weight training program
3) an exciting cycling plan that will make anyone puke

“That’s all I have to say about that.” –Forrest Gump

Tri or not to Tri…That is the Question!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 133px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_72uEV4fXukY/SpNFlVIZDHI/AAAAAAAAASo/8mWNUiTICM0/s200/TP%40BW_triBlog.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5373715288012950642" />
Well, leading up to my first Triathlon there are a few things I have learned to do and a many things I have learned not to do. The excitement and physical preparation has been awesome. The mental thoughts have taken my mind on a roller coaster of exhaustion. That part I actually like. The emotional high and lows build characteristics that I know will prepare me for many, many challenges outside of the athletic arena in my life.

I did not prepare the way many Tri athletes prepare. I have simply been riding my MTB on trails. A few fun 5k races, a handful of MTB races here and there…a little single speed riding at the Ruby Trail Project and I completed a 6 hour event at Pando the week prior on the single speed. Sure, I have done a few road rides with a set of slicks on the ol’ mtb, but overall the majority of my riding has been on the dirt. My swimming is something less than spectacular and running has been a training tool of simple recovery days to keep the legs loose. I had planned to use whatever I had in the tank and A LOT of GRIT to muscle through the race. I wanted to just experience the challenge.

The event I entered was only a Sprint Triathlon, but still a 500m open water swim, 20k road ride, and then finish up with a 5k run can take its toll on anyone.

I had a goal of 1hour 10minutes going into the event. I thought I could hang on with a 13min swim. Rock 35mins on the bike and kill the run with a 20min 5k. Add 2 minutes of transitions and bam…1hour 10mins, right?

The swim started off okay and I doggie paddled, floated, back stroked and splashed like a kid in a pool. However, when I excited the water I could still see the pack in front of me and I smiled. I got through the 1st transition and was pumped about the bike. I started off and was blazing. I picked off a few guys in my AG, and then about mile 3 into the ride my hamstrings decided today was not the day to push so hard. Cramps set in and I downshifted to spin an easier gear to maintain my position for a few hundred yards. The cramps never seemed to go away and I had no power at all. My mental game was on and ready to rock, but no delivery from my chicken legs…spent, son! I knew at this point it was going to be all survival mode which makes for a long ride and a longer 5k run coming home. When I made it back to the 2nd transition I pitted my bike slipped into my running shoes and out of the gate I went. I started to run and nothing, I mean nothing! My legs had enough and said “Um, sorry mister not today!” This was a huge blow because just the previous Monday night I did a 5k in about 19:40 and was pumped about laying it down at the tri. Instead I jogged the course and decided to take it all in. I began to think about the ENTIRE race, the ENTIRE preparation, and the ENTIRE journey!

I had a few teammates and many friends competing and cheering. Paul Seely, Brian Seely, Ben Miller, Pat Ward from TSB and many other pals from JUST FINISH competed. Lee Tremp, Jason Schneider, Kevin Green and many, many other friends and family hung out for the event. Thanks to all of them for the support.

I have decided that I will attempt another tri and I will work on a few transition drills and tips, do a few specific training “brick” workouts for the body to be ready for the different disciplines and I know I will be even more competitive next time.

Although, I have not seen the final results online my time posted on the prelims was 1hour 19mins. I think I took 30th overall out of about 190 entrants and 8th in my class. Congrats to all the finishers who took the challenge!

Getting after something new can be challenging and rewarding no matter what the final results are. I’m glad I have attempted a new event and I’m very happy that my family; Renee, Reese, and Rayna where there to share the personal experience with me.

Catchin' Up!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 155px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_72uEV4fXukY/SnjrlVt2wBI/AAAAAAAAASI/WBGjiyQE8Oc/s200/RaynaStonyCreekTT.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5366297982729109522" /><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_72uEV4fXukY/SnjrlEFWO4I/AAAAAAAAASA/hjtc6u7spcU/s200/ReeseStonyCreekTT.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5366297977995803522" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 191px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_72uEV4fXukY/Snjrk7FeA9I/AAAAAAAAAR4/N_dS47fHj4M/s200/TPstonycreektt2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5366297975580394450" />

Completed the Bologna 5k run on Saturday July 25th and snagged a first in my AG. This is a fun race held in Yale, MI every year. This was my first time running the event and I will be back. I was way off of my personal goal of breaking 18mins, but have a few more planned for the year...look out! I followed it up on Sunday with the Stony Creek MTB Time Trial. I rode fair and finished mid pack. The girls got to hang out and race as well. I'm a proud dad of two pretty cool girls. The photos above are from the Stony Creek event. My pal Jason The Shitty Blogger took the snap shots! Thanks, bro!

Outside of those quick events...been running, mtbing, road riding, and yes folks swimming!!!! You see I plan on attempting my first Triathlon August 23rd. It’s a local event and I plan to tackle the sprint distance this time around. 500m swim, 20k bike, 5k run. This will be just enough to make me puke, but not enough to make my eyes bulge & bleed finishing up the run.

My mtb schedule has been lacking the weekend in and weekend out event after event this summer. Honestly, it has been nice not thinking about mtb’s 24/7. I have had a perfect mix of family, fun, and recreation. COOL!

This weekend I plan to get after a multi-sport event with obstacles, mtb’s, mud pits, running and FUN! It’s a local event called the Mud Fest. Should be a great event to mix it up!

The End of a Fun Summer Weekend!

America's birthday has come and gone once again. I was off for 3 days and packed all of them to the brim with family fun, chores, hobbies, bbq's and more.

Last Friday morning I was able to get out in the woods and ride around Stony Creek with my brother Mark on our MTB's. This was great for the both of us to spend a bit of time away from the daily grind and take in some of the magic silence of the single track in the woods.

As soon as I got home Renee and I took the kids to lunch at Applebee's, then continued our journey to Lexington for a fun day of walking around the marina and beach. The girls got to have some ice cream and see all the boats docked in the marina for the fireworks show that was to take place later that night.

When we got home I had promised the girls we would camp out in the tent in the backyard. We had to deliver a few pop-up tents for the BBQ and fireworks show later in the day. Each and every year Devin (my brother-in-law) and Daren put on a better show. This year left no-one unsatisfied. Thank you to them for the great party!

Sunday after only a few winks I decided to tackle a quick 5k fun run in Algonac. The 27th annual pickerel race needed a good swift kick...I couldn't deliver, but ran with Ken (my brother-in-law) and several other JUST FINISH members. I managed a 2nd place finish in my A.G. category!

Later that afternoon, Renee and I were able to break away for a bit to get in a quick ride out on the Ruby Trail. She has only been on the trail a few times and she did awesome! Pretty technical trail for anyone to ride and she didn't gripe at all.

Whew, I'm whooped! I wrestled the ugly demon the last few weeks and last Sunday was like a cage match for me.

I tweaked my ankle the week prior to the event so my body was trying to heal and I kept pushing the time ahead too fast. Besides the ankle, I have not been on the bike much at all this year. This pisses me off because once the gun goes off I want to turn on the switch so bad, but physical preparation leading up to the guts and glory are slim. Making the battle within even harder. I want to compete and know I can compete, but no gas in the tank...ouch! I'm sure over the next few weeks I will start to catch my wind and hopefully be able to tune up the ol' internal motor. First, hats off to Scott Quiring! His craftsmanship and skills are crazy mad...got to give him his props. We had gone back and forth many, many times trying to get a new look. I kept pushing him for the flat matte black with concerns on his end about the chemistry of the paint and curing. Well, at the end of the day and after we got in several fist fights...this is what came about. (kidding on the fist fights, that little dude would lay me flat in a second.)The paint with the tone-on-tone details came out great!

Got to give some more "BIG" props to my pal "Stud" Lee. He took a box of shitty parts mixed it with some new and built this up for me. THANK YOU!

I do plan on a few upgrades in the near future. These include a new seat post, saddle, crank, drive train, stem and bar. As for now I'm glad I can pedal it and enjoy the ride!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://toddpowersmtb.blogspot.com/2009/05/new-two-niner-is-built.html' title='The New "Q Ti 29er" However, it seemed to last an entire week. The girls and I were able to get out on Saturday the 25th and enjoy the weather. We went to the local rail trail for an organized clean-up day. Our local cycling club, Team Sandbag is a proud sponsor of a portion of the trail from (Duce Rd. - Beard Rd.) and we rode our bikes with our clean-up bags and truly enjoyed the day.

Reese and Rayna loved the trail as it was their first time on it. We got to see some cool stuff and Reese pedaled her bike by herself almost 6 miles. This is exciting because only 6 days earlier she just learned how to ride a 2-wheeler. Now, from a dad who is avid cyclist, this is a HUGE day for me...I WAS MORE PUMPED UP about the deal than anyone could imagine. I know once my family members see the long winded video I shot, it will show it.

What You Saying?

Same ol' boring story, but this time...it involves SUNSHINE! I was excited to get outside and take on some competition. The TSB mountain bike gang showed up to battle the chill of the morning and take a stab at running. Even though many of the guys consider themselves mtber's I was not surprised by the results. Many whom haven't run since gym class in high school or only a few who may have jogged here and there over the years ROCKED today. They are all competitors no matter what the fun spirited competition may be and rose to the challenge.

I managed to accomplish exactly what I thought I would do so early in the season. I completed the 5k in 21:28. Happy with the result and squeezed out a 2nd place out of 22 runners in my A.G. I WILL BREAK the 18 min mark in 2009.

I was also excited to get out and finally meet many faces from JUST FINISH. Great group of like minded people who enjoy running, and any fun challenge as well.

Renee, Reese, Rayna, and I got to go back downtown for the St. Patty's day parade. The girls loved the sun and all the Leprechaun's and free candy. We stopped for lunch at the local Coffee shop (The Raven) for a quick bite then headed home.

SUNDAY SUNSHINE - I got in just over 16 miles on the SS around town today. I saw a lot of people enjoying the weather. A lot of walkers a handful of runners and only 1 other cyclist.

I stopped by the city skate/bmx park to watch the youngsters tear it up on the ramps. We had a pretty good base of snow until temps soared in the mid 50's for a few days followed by a day of rain.

Now, back to the low 30's for the weekend. I plan to get outside and ride for a short spin on Saturday. I'm looking forward to a long ride on Sunday. Not sure yet if I'm doing the 50miler with my pals, or sticking local around the house. I'm glad I made the commitment to do this.

I did make a few 2009 goals and one of them is to either run or ride for 365 consecutive days...wish me well!

Riding In The Freezing Rain...YeeHaw!

Well, a few of us were able to break the Holiday stress and get out for awhile. It was good to just be outside and enjoy the fresh air. I've been out running here and there and I can't stand the trainer indoors, so I was pumped to pedal no matter how bad the weather was. We didn't pedal long and when we were done we warmed up with a cup of coffee afterwards at my house. I want to mix it up a bit this year. I plan to run 1 maybe 2 marathons as well as chase the expert mtber's around in the woods a bit. I try to keep the same routine, but it sure does get hard with all the competing pressures of life. Sometimes I feel almost as working out is a job. That's when I realize I need to tone down the workouts and make them fun.

This is when I mix it up a bit. Maybe run a different route or ride a different trail. When I'm finished I enjoy all the effort, but lacing up those shoes can be hard some days. If I'm pushed for time, this is when I will try to beat a previous workout's time. It creates a sense of inner competition that motivates me to push my workout as hard as I can.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
-Simplify your life and smile today!

A Ride In The Woods!

Kalkaska to my favorite city up north...the big TC (Traverse City). Threw the woods its about 27 miles and what a ride. This was my 4th Ice Man race and by far my favorite. I had an average race, nothing spectacular. I finished mid pack in my A.G. 55th out of 100 in the expert 35-39 class with a time of 2:00:03. Only a few seconds from snapping the 2 hour mark. When I first saw the results on the board at the race I thought it said 3 tenths. It wasn't until today I read the final results and saw that it was 3 seconds. The guys on the team were talking smack about the 3 tenths...I guess I will really hear it now. My goal was 2 hours and I'm satisified with what I did.

Maybe next season I will train a little harder for this event. There is so much hype about this race. The weather, the end of the season, the party, all the big names are in town, etc, etc, etc. Maybe I see a 1:45 in the future...who knows, but me, eh?

The TSB gang showed up big time this year. Many of the guys shaved some huge numbers off of their previous times and we all had a great time hanging out.

The So-Called "Cold Wall" Of A Marathon!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_72uEV4fXukY/SP8x20MpuxI/AAAAAAAAAD8/ljWd7rq0dck/s320/FinishLine2008.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259977707586435858" />
Oh, its dark, cold and one mean mother scratcher! I ran into the nasty witch at mile 18. Sure I had to stop, regroup, stretch and decide if I wanted to keep fighting. I choose to fight and keep my sloooow jog motoring!

This past Sunday some 18,000 people roamed the streets of D-town on a pretty chilly morning. When the gun went off it was about 37 out and I was shaking. I think I was shaking more from being nervous than physically being cold. I started in coral B, this was the second wave. I registered early and I think that's how I got up front. I did not put any type of finish time. Most of the group I was with were not rookies. In fact most were sub 3 hour F.F.G.'s! (effing, fast, guys)

My ultimate goal the last month or so has been to JUST FINISH. I'm still trying to focus on wrapping up my MTB'ing addiction. The final race of the season is November 8th in Traverse City (Ice Man/Party). Knowing this I just tried to relax as much as possible and just get it in my head I was going to go out for a long jog.

Long jog it was. I started off great with an easy 8 min pace and buried the 1/2 at 1hour 46 minutes. Felt strong and thought I could keep up the pace. Only a few more miles down road we entered onto the bridge to Belle Ille. I have heard and read all the horror stories of this part of the event but never processed them without having any experience. Well, miles 17 - 20 are on the Island and I got my ass handed to me something fierce!

I ran into Don Green a (Just Finish) teammate who I ran the relay with last year on the exit and he shouted a few words of encouragement. I told him I had an hour left in me and I was struggling big time...this was right at about mile 20.

At this time my pace slowed down dramatically. Each mile got slower and slower. 9:35, 9:40, 9:50, 10:10, slower, slower. I kept this trot up for the next 4 miles.

With about 3 to go you start to see the city scape better and the streets are just packed. People yelling words of encouragement, beer stations (unofficial) but yes, beer, and the noise of the pure pain pounding in my head!

The 4:15 pace leader come running by me by herself and told me to pick it up. It's amazing that these pacers can run the entire marathon with a sign on a stick and coach, talk, and encourage all that join them to keep pace. We had 1 mile to go and I tried to pick it up, but there was no gas in the tank. I was on E and had been there the last 7 miles.

A few turns and I saw it. This overhead aluminum structure with a large banner...FINISH. I shit myself a few times and couldn't of smiled more if I tried. I kept rotating my bones over and over until I crossed the line.

This was my first marathon!
Today I'm confident I will attempt another one. I will also condition my body better. I'm in fair shape...just not marathon shape. I ride the ol' mtb around in the woods, but running is such a different beast to tame. Different muscles, the pounding and jarring of your legs takes it toll.

People ask me why do/did you do this? My response has been...well I did it for a variety of reasons one is because it has been on the 2-DO list for years and now its not! Another reason why is because I can. There are many, many more but I don't want to bore you...I'm sure you have a reason that is just as important...GET AFTER IT!

I have learned many valuable lessons about trying to accomplish goals in life. This is a stepping stone to allow myself to do that.

Kevin Green one of my closest friends, encouraged me to attempt it. He has accomplished many great things in life and I recognize and respect that. I kept asking myself...what am I missing, why would he keep pushing me to do this? Now I know and I can't thank him enough for reaming my ass about running and doing something challenging and uncomfortable in life. I learned in the end it has nothing to do with running, but has everything to do with the ol' line of JUST FINISH!

Oh...my time...does it really matter. Today I could give 2 shits what the clock said when I finished.

Cyclo-What?

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_72uEV4fXukY/SOEmz4jpWzI/AAAAAAAAADM/yyh_uNO_biA/s320/IthacaGPStart" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251521313287789362" />
I took another stab at the ol' cyclo-cross on Sunday. They had a prime (dash for cash) sprint that John won for his C class and I won for the B's. SWEEET! I don't have CX bike so I raced with my MTB and hung in for a few laps and took the 2nd half of the race off! Benny and I managed to not get lapped in the race and had a ball.

John and Nolan both took 2nd's. Curt needs to cut off his bad leg and get a carbon fiber deal so he can pedal. He did manage to snap over 300 photos of the event.

Oh, by the way...check out TSB skin suit!!! Curt took this photo of the start about 400 yds in!

Fall Classic SS Style!

I entered the Fall Classic @ Addison Oaks County Park on Sunday and WOW what a great course. I love this trail and the new sections ROCK!!!

There was a field of about 10-12 guys in my class. 4 laps / 28ish miles of pure fast rolling joy! I was geared to big for my style, but managed to hang on for 8th place. I wish I would of pedaled an easier 34-18 gearing on the ol' tank 29er! I just left the 34-16 on and suffered!

Up Next The Grand Prix Of Ithaca / Cyclo-Cross race. I settled in the 3rd spot and tried to relax. We didn't push to hard. In fact I expected to go harder. The trail got some much needed rain the night before and the trail was in good shape. I have only ridden at PLRA a few times. This is a course where local knowledge assist in picking the best lines and make the trip much more enjoyable.

With about 5 miles to go of the 30 I came in pretty fast on a long sweeping turn and the bike just slid out from under me. No damage to me or the bike. In fact it didn't even slow me down that much. I must have rolled the rear tire because I got down the trail about 100yds and heard the shitting sound of shszzzssssss! I pinched the rear. I started to change the rear and looked up to see a few of the guys in my class pedal by...OUCH!!! I finished up and just pedaled home.

I finished up 6th out of 9 starters in my class. The course was about 12 miles...and drrrry! My geared class was first. I started about 10:20 and boy was I slow. I just couldn't get my body in motion. After about 3 miles in I started to loosen up. I came home in about 52 minutes. Just squeaked a 5th place podium finish...SWWWWEEEET!

I had about 45 minutes before the SS class started. I felt tired going into this as well. The field was loaded with competition today! I took off and this time at the 3 mile mark I threw up in my mouth:)! I kept pedalin' and blasted the finish line in 55minutes.

All in all a fun day of racing at Stoney! We had quite a few TSBer's battling the course as well. Congrats to all that raced!

I love the Stoney Creek single-track!

Learning To Hang On!

Well, I was out front with the pack this race. In fact I came across the loop in 1st place for 2 laps. I thought since I know the course pretty good I could hang on, BUUUTTT, the mud.... aghhh the mud just fried my legs. Today I think I got beat from the lack of training early on in the season. I know, I know that endurance thing again. Some of the regular podium guys in my class have a few more years of racing under their belts and more base miles coming into the season. Oh, did I mention all of them can HAUL THE MAIL...this always makes for a fast (heart high in your chest) type of race!

Going into this weekend I knew I would be able to hang out in the pack. Being a shorter technical course...my style. The rain totally ruined my game plan and everyone elses for that matter. We all slipped, fell, and just tried to stay up right the first lap or so. I ended up sitting 3rd coming home about 2-3 minutes back I think. I haven't seen the final results yet. My first top 5 finish.

Congrats to TSB for having a great day despite the shitty weather. It was great to see a lot of the non-regulars make the Ruby race. This turned out to be a good time as the day went on! The parking lot was packed and the buzz was in the air! The area had just got blasted Thursday with 11 inches of rain. Everyone was talking about the course conditions. The area had lost power and many local hotels lost power (ours included) and there was alot of downed trees. Word had it that the course was clear with only a few trees still down and one area with standing water.

Saturday started for me about 4:45am. We got to the pits around 6:15. The race started at 7:00am. They started us down the road about 2 miles (mass start). The first lap I came through in about 2:15. Brad one of my team mates rode with me. We did not see or hear from Jason at this time. Brad took off for his 2nd lap and I stayed in the pits and ate a banana and took a few deep breaths. Off I went about 2 minutes behind Brad. This lap was killer for me. I have never been much of a long distance guy. I knew I had about 8hours of pedalin' to go, so I kept at a pace where I felt comfortable. I had averaged about 2:30 per lap from here out!

After completing my 3rd lap I came in to the pits and Jason was beat up. He said he bonked hard and looked me dead in the eyes and said he gave all he could! I respect him for attempting this event and his efforts put forth. He buried 50 miles!

Renee, kept looking at me and asking how I felt. I told her I was fine and headed back for 1 more. I wanted to come in under 10 hours. My unofficial time was around 10:10. I was happy the race was over and I had finished. Rick Plite the promoter was at the finish line and gave me a quick high five and a finisher's patch to commerate the accomplishment. Brad completed his 4th lap around the 9:20 mark.
www.lumberjack100.com

I also raced this event for charity. I solicited my friends and family for pledges to the Celiac Foundation. This past weekend there was a USA-C MTB stage race held in Brighton, MI and many team mates and myself made the journey to give it whirl. Saturday started off with a 6.5 mile Time Trial through some of the twistist trail in the state. I placed a cool 4th on the trusty ol' Single Speed. Later that day was the Short Track XC race. This was .75 mile loop of turns, hills, and loads of grass. This race was 5 laps and I placed 3rd in my class. Going into Sunday I felt great, but it was HOT. Temps and humidity made it tough on everyone. The Cross Country portion of the Stage Race was a 8 mile loop through a rolling single track trail. I placed 4th and took an overall 4th place in the Stage Event. The TSB squad did very well. This coming weekend is the Lumber Jack 100. This is a 100 mile race up in Manistee, MI. A few of the TSB boys and the wives will be making the hike. Results and story to follow...sit tight!

Let's Go Racing!

Well, the season has started and I have 3 down and 9 left. All three events I completed have been totally different. The first (Pontiac Lake Time Trial) was a 2 lap sprint. The second (Bloomer Park XC)was a twisting 4 lap cross country race, and the third was a 12 hour (Addison Oaks) endurance race. Pretty much the whole cycling gamma all thrown in a month or so of racing.

I have learned that my riding technique is fine...but I lack a few of the most important attributes of mtb racing ENDURANCE and STRENGTH. Looking back over the winter months I wish I would of pounded the weights a little more. I need some QUADS and ARMS.

I have raced all the events this season in the Expert class. This is a pretty big jump in racing style and ability. Of the events I have raced at I would have placed pretty high in the sport class if I still raced there. I'm glad of my decision to come out and play with the big boys. I'm bottom of the barrel, but I can honestly say I'm having a ball when I'm in the woods!

Spring...Is It Here?

I usually don't mind the seasons. I find it harder and harder daily to train. Work, family, SNOW, and cold weather don't help. When I do find the time I can honestly say it burns some necassary stress that doesn't need to be couped up in me! I started a training program that is different from the past. This will take some time to see the results I think I want to see, but I'm going to do and hang on. I do some weights, core training, running, and bike riding! It should be fun, we are all at about the same speed, so the bragging rights will be HIGH going into the winter training season!

Oh, I probably should get outside this weekend and decorate our house for the upcoming holiday season...we'll see how that goes!

"SUPER BOWL" of MTB!

Well, it's over...the 'o8 MTB season!

I'm kinda glad. I had a rough year getting my strength back and my health! I plan to continue my training and do some cross and weight training in the coming months...look out!

Saturday I ran what I expected I would do (2:08). I knew going into it with having so little time on the bike through October it would be tough. I'm happy for now with my finish! The course was fast with the regular sandpits, rolling climbs, and big ring two track! I was going hard for the first 20, then the hardest part (in my opinion) of the course hit me like a brick wall...ouch! It took everything I had just to finish. I did finish 11 minutes faster than last year. I WILL FINISH 11 MINUTES FASTER NEXT YEAR AS WELL!!!

My teammates all improved HUGE this season as well. I'm proud of everyone of them that made the trip and finished.

What's Happening?

Race info: 8/18th: A few of us TSBer's went over to Pando for the 6 hour solo event. This was a first for myself as a solo rider. I need to start getting some extra race pace mileage in prior to ICEMAN. I have a goal of 2 hours stuck in my head and really think I'm capable of doing so. I placed 2nd, Lee placed 4th and Joe placed 5th. All in all we had a ball. We camped onsite and drove down to Ft. Custer on Sunday with thoughts of racing the Time Trial. However, none of us that did the 6 hour event competed.

8/26th: Pontiac Lake Rec. Area XC race was a nervous deal for me. I'm always nervous prior to a race, but this time it was more than the regular pre-race jitters. I decided to challenge myself and compete in the Expert class. I want to start building a better race foundation of longer events and race stamina. I did what I thought I could do. I know I need alot more saddle time to compete with these guys. They FLY! Out of the 13 in my class I took 11th. I think once I get back to decent physical shape and gain some of my muscle back I will be fine. I would be happy to run mid-pack next summer!

We are planning a fun team ride this Sunday 9/2 at Ruby and it should be a good time to just ride and not worry about racing for a weekend! I hope to see many of the locals and TSBer's out on the trail!

Upcoming Races and Rides!

Well, I've been sneaking some longer morning rides in and I FEEL GREAT! I don't know the course very well. I got to preride the previous Friday and I think it helped. My nerves were building Sunday morning about running 2 classes. I raced my regular Sport geared class and had an average time. I got bogged down behind a few riders multiple times, but still ended up on the podium with a 5th place. Hey, thats racing! Then, about 15 minutes after I finished that race I took a stab at the SINGLE SPEED class on my new 29er. I have only been on this bike a few times, but have been eager at attempting a SS race. Well, I did an average sport time and took a 6th place. Overall I'm pleased with my SS results and plan to do more SS racing in the future! My physical strength and endurance is coming around. I'm still not at 100%, but feeling better everyday. I plan to maintain my fitness level this year better than in the past where it went up and down throughout the season!

Ruby, Ruby Your'e So Fine!

Well, I guess this trail is a "LOVE" / "HATE" deal. I have never heard anyone say..."Yeah, I kinda like Ruby. Personally, I love it. I guess because it fits my riding style and training/saddle time. This is a short "POP" sprint technical trail with many things thrown at you. The USA-C race was on Sunday and the attendance for both the race entries and spectactors reached record highs for this event. Our team did a great job prepping the trail and racing. There are so many individual success stories on our team it makes me proud to hang with good people! We have people who's goal was just to finish and they did. We have people who wanted to beat a previous time by 5, 10, 15 minutes and they did! Anyways, congrats to everyone who raced the "RUBY TRAIL PROJECT!

On a personal note: I did what I wanted to do...break the 1:20 mark and ride consective splits! I have finally been able mix in some late evening rides. WOW, what a great stress relief. The race season is up and running every weekend if one chooses to race! I plan to do 2 events per month. I still am in the beginning stages of my new career and my family keeps me on my toes, too! I been trying to ride at least 3 times per week. I race in the sport division and this type of training keeps me in the middle of the pack. I was beat up the first few miles of the course. I also experienced a broken chain twice in 2 different spots along the trail. This didn't help my race when every SECOND counts. Spinning on the trainer in the basement gets old fast. It was around 40 degrees and sunny. I took my new Q-Ball/29 rigid SS for a quick ride of about 12 miles. I must say that thing is SWEET! Nice ride, rolls nice, I even like the rigid fork on the thing. I can't wait to get it on a trail. I know with the weather changing I will have more opportunity to get outside and ride. Now I just need to make the time to ride!

Domestic House Husband For The Day!

After a long weekend of children's dentist appointments, doctors appointments, haircuts, dance class, the chiropractor, and the hospital... Joyful, challenging, and rewarding all in the same breath.

With that being said my biking hobby has taken the back seat lately. After last fall and when I started to get my health back I thought I could've kept going and been able to roll right into this winters training season. This season has been tough. I originally had plans to posibilly move up to the next level in racing, but I doubt that will happen. I'm committed to our team and plan to assist with the many ongoing projects. I plan to attend many events and even try a few new ones.

The MMBA expo has come and gone. This is the end of one season and kinda the start of a new one. Most people including myself start to get their motors running once this weekend passes. This past season our TEAM...Team Sandbag was honored as MMBA club of the year for 2006. This came as a great surprise to us all. We have dedicated a lot of time to a trail that isn't in the mainstream loop of the MMBA (I call it the RUBY PROJECT). We have also added over 25 new members to the Holly/Flint chapter of the organization.

Happy B-Day "Rayna"!

We celebrated my daughter's 1st birthday party on Saturday.
